What is a Cross Connection?

Cross connection control keeps our drinking water safe.

In the City of Red Deer, all Industrial, Commercial and Institutional buildings require a backflow (Utility Bylaw 3606/2018 Effective March 1, 2024 (pdf)). This is to prevent any possible cross connection that could cause contamination to the city’s drinking water. This also follows the National Plumbing Code, and Canadian Standards Association B64 Series Standards.

Cross connection devices prevent water that has been used for industrial processing, washing, irrigation, or heating and cooling from potential suction or reverse flow back into our drinking water.

Refer to our Cross Connection Brochure (pdf) for more information.

The City of Red Deer has moved to online submission through SwiftComply.

If you are a tester or enter information for a tester, you will need to create a login to sign in. Below are links to sign up, sign in and get help with the SwiftComply software:

If you have a backflow that needs to be tested, contact a professional on the Service Providers January 2024 (pdf) list.
