Energy Diversification and Emissions Strategy

In 2025, The City developed an Energy Diversification and Emissions Strategy to provide a clear, actionable roadmap to diversify energy sources, improve efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Strategy identifies linkages between the actions and goals that are outlined in the 2019 Environmental Master Plan and the 2018 Community Energy and Emissions Plan. The strategy identified a focused set of 44 prioritized, ready-to-implement actions grouped into:

  • City organizational actions: Actions The City can lead directly (e.g., landfill gas capture, building retrofits, fleet optimization, and wastewater upgrades) and;
  • Community initiatives: Initiatives The City enables through policy, partnerships, and programs (e.g., programs to engage the citizens of Red Deer to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, deep retrofit incentives for institutional and commercial building owners, better transit and trails, or improving the heath of urban forests).
