Frequently Asked Questions

What are Council Committees?

Council Committees make recommendations and give advice to City Council.

Council Committees generally fall into two categories:

  • Standing Council Committees: A permanent council committee
  • Ad Hoc Committee: A short-term committee established to serve a specific purpose

The City also recruits members for its quasi-judicial boards, Red Deer Library Board, Red Deer Regional Airport Authority Board, and the River Bend Golf and Recreation Society Board.

How are Council Committee members chosen?

Council Committee members are chosen throughout the year. The Nomination Committee reviews all applications, and makes recommendations to City Council. City Council makes the final decision on all committee appointments.

Some committee positions require specific expertise relevant to the issues the committee deals with. Others only require time, dedication, and desire to give back to the community.

Who can apply?

Specific membership and eligibility requirements vary depending on the Board, Commission or Committee. If you are interested in applying, read the Board's, Commission's or Committee's information on mandates, eligibility requirements, and time commitments. The City of Red Deer is looking for:

The City of Red Deer Committees Bylaw provides additional information about the appointment process of public members to Boards, Commissions and Committees.

When will Council select members?

City Council will select and appoint members as required.
