Electrical Permits

If electrical wiring exists and you are replacing existing fixtures (ie. switches, plugs, lights), an electrical permit is not required. For any alterations or new wiring, a permit is required.

Who can apply?

A licensed contractor, with a valid Master's Certificate, can apply for an electrical permit. If you are a contractor requiring a City of Red Deer Business Licence, please visit our Licensing page to obtain and submit a Business Licence application, and for more information.

Step 1: Submit your application

How do I apply?

You can apply for your permit in one of the following ways:

OnlineMyPermits (fastest, easiest way to submit your application, available 24/7)

Alternatively, you can complete the Electrical Permit Application (pdf) form and submit it by email or in person:

Email: inspections@reddeer.ca
In person: Main floor, City Hall (4914 48 Avenue)

If you are submitting a permit application for solar panel installation, additional documentation will be required. Please visit our Solar Panel page for more information.

Step 2: Site inspections

What inspections will I need?

You will need at least two Safety Codes inspections during the course of your electrical installation:

  1. A rough-in inspection before concealing any work
  2. A final inspection when all fixtures and covers are installed and all wiring is completed

You will be required to correct all deficiencies. Re-inspection fees or other penalties may apply.

How do I schedule an inspection?

*Inspections must be scheduled by 3 p.m. to book for the following business day.
