Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is recognized in Canada on the second Monday in October. In 2026, Thanksgiving falls on Monday, October 12. It is a general holiday in Alberta.

For many people, Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends, share food and reflect on the people, experiences and communities they are grateful for. People may observe the day in different ways, and not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving.

Why Thanksgiving is recognized

Thanksgiving is a familiar Canadian cultural and civic occasion associated with gratitude, harvest traditions and connection.

Recognizing the day can also be an opportunity to reflect on the relationships and sense of community that help make Red Deer a place where people can feel connected and supported.

As with many cultural traditions, experiences of Thanksgiving can differ based on family, culture, personal beliefs and individual circumstances. An inclusive community makes space for those different experiences.

Ways to mark Thanksgiving

There are many ways to recognize the occasion, including:

  • spending time with family, friends or neighbours
  • sharing a meal or family tradition
  • reaching out to someone who may appreciate connection
  • volunteering or supporting a local community organization
  • reflecting on the people, places and experiences you are grateful for
  • learning about traditions and perspectives that may be different from your own

However you spend the day, Thanksgiving can be an opportunity to appreciate the connections that help strengthen our community.
