International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Each year on October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty recognizes the experiences, voices and efforts of people living in poverty and calls attention to the need to address poverty in all its forms.

The United Nations formally designated October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 1992. The day emphasizes that poverty is about more than income. It can affect a person's access to housing, food, health care, education, transportation, safety and opportunities to participate fully in community life.

Why this day matters

Poverty can affect individuals and families in different ways and at different times in their lives. Financial hardship may also intersect with barriers related to housing, employment, health, accessibility, transportation and social inclusion.

People experiencing poverty can also face stigma and judgement when accessing services or participating in community life. Recognizing the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is an opportunity to consider the importance of dignity, respect, inclusion and meaningful participation in the way programs, services and communities are designed.

The United Nations emphasizes that efforts to address poverty should recognize the voices and lived experiences of people directly affected by it.

Poverty and our community

Creating a community where people can participate and belong includes considering the barriers that may prevent people from accessing basic needs, services and opportunities.

Municipal governments also have a role in this work. The City of Red Deer administers federal and provincial funding for affordable housing and homelessness initiatives and works with community organizations and other orders of government to support housing and homelessness programs.

The City also supports community wellbeing through initiatives such as Family and Community Support Services, housing and homelessness work and other locally driven social programs.

How can you take part?

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is an opportunity to learn, reflect and consider how each of us can contribute to a community where everyone is treated with dignity.

You can:

  • learn about poverty and the barriers people may experience in your community
  • listen to and learn from people with lived experience of poverty
  • challenge stereotypes and language that stigmatize people because of their income, housing status or circumstances
  • support local organizations working to address food insecurity, housing instability and other barriers
  • consider accessibility and affordability when planning programs, activities or events
  • volunteer or contribute to community organizations when you are able
  • learn about services and supports available in Red Deer and help connect people to them

Small actions can help create a community where people feel respected, included and able to participate.
