xReporting Motor Vehicle Collisions

When to call police at the scene
- Call 9-1-1 if there has been a serious injury or fatality, or if a driver involved in the accident appears to be in violation of the Criminal Code (for example, intoxication).
- Call the Police non-emergency line at 403-406-2200 (24 hours) if:
- a vehicle involved in the collision is not drivable
- a driver involved fails to provide registration, insurance or a driver’s license.
- a vehicle involved in the collision cannot be moved from the road and may cause another collision.
If all vehicles are drivable and none of the above apply, you do not need police at the scene.
When to report to police after a collision
You must make a police report after the collision if
- anyone is injured, even minorly
- if damage appears to be $5,000 or more. (If unsure, get an estimate first. By law, vehicles with more than $5,000 in damage cannot be repaired without proof the collision was reported.)
Exchanging information with the other driver
Exchange registration, insurance, and driver’s licence details with the other driver. Use your phone to take pictures of documents, the vehicles, damage, and the collision location if possible.
Filing a report in person
Reports are filed in person at the downtown detachment: 4602 51 Avenue, Red Deer. Visit Detachment Profile and Office Hours for hours of operation. You will be asked to complete a Collision Report Form. Bring:
- The information exchanged with the other driver.
- Details about the vehicles, damage, and collision location.
Important: Reporting to police does not notify your insurance company. You are responsible for contacting your insurer.
Reporting a hit and run
Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offence. Always report a hit and run to police.
- If your vehicle is struck and the other driver leaves, try to record the make, model, and licence plate (even partial plates help).
- If your parked vehicle is hit and no note is left, report it immediately in person at the downtown detachment.
Single Vehicle Collisions
Some single vehicle collisions involving one driver with a class 3 licence plate can now be reported online at report-my-collision.alberta.ca. These include:
- Your vehicle struck an animal
- Your vehicle struck an object (not another vehicle)
- Your vehicle ran off the road
- Your parked vehicle was involved in a hit and run
Note: If you have witness information or any supporting evidence, you must report in person at the downtown detachment (4602 51 Avenue, Red Deer).
