Red Deer, Alta. - The Red Deer RCMP Downtown Patrol Unit (DPU) is a dedicated team of officers focused specifically on the city’s core. Established in 2018, the unit was created in response to growing concerns around crime, social disorder, and public safety downtown. Its goal is simple to provide a consistent, visible presence while addressing the unique challenges of the area.
Unlike general duty officers who respond to calls throughout the city, members of the Downtown Patrol Unit concentrate exclusively on downtown Red Deer. Their patrols are targeted and proactive, allowing them to build familiarity with the community and respond to issues more directly and effectively.
The work they do goes beyond enforcement. DPU officers conduct foot, bike and UTV patrols and regularly check in with local businesses, respond to concerns from the public, and engage with vulnerable individuals. They focus on early intervention and work to prevent problems before they escalate. The team also plays a key role in managing social disorder, supporting encampment responses, and connecting people with resources when appropriate.
The unit includes both RCMP members and Community Peace Officers, this blend of experience allows the team to respond to a wide range of situations: from enforcing bylaws and provincial offences to assisting with criminal investigations and ongoing public safety initiatives.
A major strength of the Downtown Patrol Unit is its ability to work collaboratively. The team regularly partners with the Police and Crisis Team, the Virtual Opioid Dependency Program unit, the Downtown Business Association and other local service providers. These partnerships help ensure a coordinated response and provide individuals with access to the right supports.
The Downtown Patrol Unit continues to be a consistent presence downtown, helping to address concerns, support long-term solutions, and contribute to a safer, more connected community.
“We are proud to be a visible presence in the downtown core and build familiarity with the people who live, work and visit here,” said Cpl. Samuel Holm of DPU. “ We are always open to a hello or a quick chat. The more connected we are with the community, the more effective we can be in keeping it safe and welcoming.”
