Red Deer, Alta. – During the month of November, community members will notice a banner hanging out front of the Red Deer RCMP Main Detachment, highlighting that November is Family Violence Prevention Month. While concerns and awareness surrounding this important topic are focused on year-round, RCMP in Red Deer want to bring extra attention to the community about this issue, and remind those who may be in need of support of the assistance available to them.
Red Deer RCMP has a team dedicated to investigating reports of domestic violence. The Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Unit is made up of RCMP members and a support worker from the City of Red Deer. The focus of the IPV Unit is to investigate high-risk and complex domestic violence matters, monitor prolific offenders, and provide support and safety planning to victims and families. The IPV Unit works in partnership with federal and provincial partners, as well as local agencies to provide intervention, promote awareness and assist in the prevention of family violence.
RCMP recognize that statistics and calls to police do not always represent the whole picture, and that incidents of family violence may go unreported. Police remind the community that supports and resources are available, and encourage residents to call police if they or someone they know are experiencing violence in the home or within their relationships. Family Violence happens in many forms and across all demographics. It can affect anyone and leaves a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities.
Help is available and you are not alone. Together, we can break the silence and build safer, stronger communities.
