Red Deer RCMP arrest and charge male on electric bicycle

Red Deer, Alta. – On May 19, 2023, Red Deer’s RCMP Downtown Patrol Unit (DPU) were conducting patrols on 45th street when they witnessed a male riding an electronic bicycle, carrying an extendable baton and knife.

The RCMP Downtown Patrol Unit completed an investigation which lead to the seizure of various weapons and drugs. Of significance, the member seized a shot gun with the serial number scratched off, as well as ammunition and a significant amount of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Rodney Arens (45), a resident of Red Deer was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon X5, including bayonet, bear spray, intimidation firearm, shotgun
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose- extendable baton, fixed blade knife
  • Possession of a controlled substance- fentanyl, methamphetamine, gamma-hydroxybutyrate
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, shotgun, fixed blade knife
  • Possession of a Firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Possession of break-in instrument
  • Tampering with serial number (on firearm)
  • Careless Use of a firearm

Arens is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on June 09, 2023.

Based on the police officer’s attention to detail and professional response, the Red Deer RCMP were able to intervene and continue positive work to keep our downtown community safe.
