Fluorescent Light Bulbs
What’s accepted?
- Fluorescent tubes
- Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs
Why is it important to recycle fluorescent lights?
Fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury, which while safe during normal operation, poses an environmental risk if it ends up in the landfill. Once the mercury is safely removed, the glass and other parts of the lights are easy to recycle.
How do I clean up a broken fluorescent light?
The US Environmental Protection Agency provides detailed instructions for clean-up. Once safely cleaned up, the broken light and materials used to clean it up should be placed in a rigid container and brought to the household hazardous waste building at the Waste Management Facility.
What should businesses do with their spent fluorescent lights?
The Waste Management Facility will accept fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs from businesses. If you have more than 50 fluorescent tubes, please call the Blue Line at 403-340-BLUE (2583) prior to coming to the Waste Management Facility.
Note: Fluorescent lights are the only type of hazardous waste the Waste Management Facility accepts from businesses.
