- For any new wiring or alteration of existing wiring, a permit is required.
- If electrical wiring already exists and you are only replacing fixtures (ie. switches, plugs, lights), a permit is not required.

Electrical Permits
Licensed Contractors
A licensed contractor, with a valid Master's Certificate, can apply for a permit.

Homeowners
A homeowner can apply for a permit if they own and reside in the property they are wiring. Homeowners cannot apply for the permit if the permit is for:
- hot tubs/pools
- main service or panel change
- solar panels
- any dwelling unit with a shared wall (townhouse, duplex, house suite, etc.)
- rental properties
- electric car charging stations
*A Homeowner Permit Premium charge will be added to the permit fee.
Heating Permits
You need a permit for the installation of any HVAC or hydronic heating system.
Only a licensed contractor with a valid sheet metal ticket can apply for a permit.

Gas Permits
- A permit is required to install, alter, or add to a gas system.
- A permit is not required for the replacement of a dryer, range or water heater.
- A permit is not required for a space heating appliance if it is located in a single family residential dwelling and no design change is required to any gas piping or venting system.
Only a licensed contractor with a valid Journeyman's Gasfitter Certification can apply for a permit.

Plumbing Permits
- A permit is required for new plumbing or alterations to existing plumbing.
- A permit is not required if plumbing exists and you are replacing or attaching fixtures.

Fireplace Permits
- A permit is required if you are installing a gas or a solid fuel (wood stove or wood burning) fireplace.
- For gas fireplaces, you will also require a Gas Permit for connecting it to the natural gas source.

Service Connection Permits
A Service Connection Permit regulates the installation of service connection pipes from the municipal system to the property line as well as the installation of water meters.
A Service Connection Permit is required if you are constructing a new building.
