The City of Red Deer is proud to announce the Recreation Centre will be officially renamed to honour the life‐long contributions of the late Don Moore, a visionary leader whose commitment to recreation helped shape the community. This morning, in a private ceremony with family, the new name was unveiled: Don Moore Recreation Centre.
“The Don Moore Recreation Centre stands as a symbol of what makes Red Deer strong: collaboration, dedication and the belief that everyone deserves access to recreation,” said Mayor Cindy Jefferies. “I’ve seen firsthand how sport and active living empower individuals. Naming this facility for Don honours his decades of service, his vision for recreation in Red Deer, and challenges all of us to carry forward his commitment to building community through play, health and belonging.”
Over his decades of service, Don Moore dedicated himself to advancing inclusive, accessible recreation services across Red Deer. His leadership helped guide major facility developments, community partnerships, and reserves that continue to serve residents of all ages and abilities.
During his 33-year career as Red Deer’s Director of Recreation, Don helped shaped The City's sporting community through building community partnerships, guiding major facility development, and helping standardize recreation operations throughout Alberta.
“As a family, we are deeply grateful for this recognition of my dad’s tireless dedication to promoting a healthy body, mind, and spirit through recreation, sport, and culture. His impact on our community and beyond truly reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation. We are humbled by the outpouring of support and the many kind words from those whose lives he touched,” said Glenn Moore, son of the late Don Moore. “For us, this honour is not only a reflection of his individual accomplishments, but also a celebration of the collaborative efforts that shaped his legacy - supported by my mom, Gloria, and the countless colleagues, volunteers, civic and provincial servants, and elected officials he worked alongside throughout his lengthy career. We will always be proud to be connected to a man his peers described as ‘the real deal’ and ‘a man who gets things done,’ and we know his influence will continue to resonate in the field of recreation in Alberta for years to come.”
The Don Moore Recreation Centre will begin transitioning to its new name over the coming months as signage and City communications are updated. The renamed facility will continue to serve as a central gathering place for recreation, wellness, and community connection - reflecting Don’s belief that accessible recreation strengthens the health and spirit of a community.
