Red Deer RCMP lay impaired driving charges

January 11, 2022 2:38 PM

Red Deer, Alta. – At 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 5, Red Deer RCMP responded to a complaint regarding a black Ford Mustang driving erratically near Eastview Middle School. It was reported that the vehicle had nearly hit another vehicle, was entering the other driving lanes, and had hit the curb several times in front of the school.

The vehicle was reported to be heading northbound towards Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, and Red Deer RCMP located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of the high school. A Mandatory Alcohol Screening was initiated and the male driver was found to be impaired by alcohol. As a result, the driver was placed under Provincial sanctions with an immediate suspension of his drivers licence and the vehicle was seized for 30 days. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for careless driving, which carries a fine of $567.

“Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injury and has devastating impacts on families,” says Mike Zufferli, Red Deer RCMP. “This incident was very concerning because the vehicle had driven through two separate school zones at a time of day when children are present.”

The Red Deer RCMP reminds the public that everyone has a part to play in the fight against impaired driving. If you witness dangerous driving behaviour or a suspected impaired driver, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
