Outdoor Community Rinks are mostly ready for use

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Parks and Recreation staff have been busy getting outdoor rinks ready for the winter season, and starting Saturday, December 18, most neighbourhood outdoor rink locations will be ready for use.

The recent cold temperatures and snowfall have provided the right conditions for ice build up; however, some rinks still have thin spots. As rinks are ready to open, hockey nets will be delivered and lighting systems will be activated at the locations. Crews expect to have all locations open over the weekend. The City would like to remind skaters that the use of helmets is recommended at all times, and hockey is not permitted at Bower Ponds or the ice skating oval at Setters Place at Great Chief Park.

The community is encouraged to reach out to their Neighbourhood Activity Centres to confirm operations. Each location may have different opportunities for washroom access, indoor skate changing and warming areas due to the current public health environment. To contact a Neighbourhood Activity Centre near you, please visit www.reddeer.ca/neighbourhoodcentres.

The Ice Oval at Setters Place at Great Chief Park opens today, December 17, 2021. Enjoy the unique experience of skating on the 400-metre outdoor ice surface. Setters Place operates within the provincial Restrictions Exemption Program. To use any of the indoor warming areas or washrooms guests are required to follow the program requirements.
