Statement from the Mayor

Mayor Veer addresses COVID-19 case numbers in city, region and province on behalf of Council

(Red Deer, Alberta)

“The rising number of cases of COVID-19 in our community and in our province is affecting us all, and although we are pandemic weary we need to continue to be diligent in ensuring we limit the spread of the virus.

I know many in our community are disappointed with current public health measures and restrictions, however, it is important to remember that we are at a critical juncture. While vaccines offer long-term hope of resuming something closer to normal life in the months ahead, we still have responsibility in the short-term to minimize spread.

This year has been a challenging one for everyone, but we will come through this if we continue to work together. Please continue to take personal precautions to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19 by following all public health measures.

Council and The City’s Emergency Operations Centre continues to closely monitor the evolving situation on a daily basis and will continue to work with Alberta Health Services to closely monitor COVID-19 activity in our community and region.

I encourage residents to support our local businesses as much as you are able during this time. We have proven time and time again that we can come together as a community, and respond to challenges head-on.

It is imperative that we remain strong and remember that every measure we take is not only to protect ourselves, but to protect all Red Deerians and capacity at our local hospital. We must work together to get through this together. We need a unified front and we need your continued support to stop the spread, and to ensure a strong finish to the marathon we have been through together."
