City responds to provincial announcement of Step 1 public health restrictions

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Yesterday, the provincial government announced changes to current public health restrictions in light of a recent rise in COVID-19 cases and variant cases.

The recent announcement indicates that restrictions will revert back to those that were applicable under Step 1 of the provincial plan, A Path Forward.

“At this time, Covid-19 continues to change and evolve with The City of Red Deer adjusting its response based on direction from the Province of Alberta and Chief Medical Officer of Health. We know the ever-changing restrictions are frustrating for our community, but we continue to do everything we can to keep our community healthy and safe while acknowledging the economic, social and health challenges this pandemic creates,” said City Manager Allan Seabrooke.

Due to the April 6 announcement, low-intensity fitness Activity Reservations such as the walking track at Servus Arena and the fitness and wellness studios at both the G.H. Dawe Community Centre and Collicutt Centre will no longer be available. Existing Activity Reservations in these areas will be cancelled and credits will be applied to user accounts. Customers with a monthly pass will be contacted and pro-rated credits will be applied as of April 7, 2021. As a result of the recent software upgrade, credits are now viewable and accessible online through Look ‘n Book accounts.

“After thorough review of yesterday’s new provincial restrictions, we have been able to determine the activities that we can continue to offer in a safe and responsible manner,” said Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent. “We are committed to providing as many opportunities for family fun, emotional well-being and physical activity as possible within the provincial guidelines.”

The following services continue to be available to our community:

  • Virtual Fitness Activity Reservations and Virtual Fitness monthly passes
  • Household Activity Reservations including access to ice-time, gymnasiums, sport courts, golf swing cages and pools
  • One-on-one training and youth team-sport with restrictions
  • Private swim lessons for individuals or households
  • Preschool programming opportunities

Currently, access to all indoor City recreation centres and arenas is by facility rental, program registration or Activity Reservation only. To view available program and activity options, please visit

At the Monday, April 12 City Council meeting, administration will share an overall municipal response update and information related to The City’s Covid-19 response going forward.
