Sikh Heritage Month

April is Sikh Heritage Month, an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the history, arts, culture and accomplishments of Sikh Canadians.

The first Sikh settlers in Canada arrived in British Columbia in the early 1900’s and settled across the lower mainland and Vancouver Island, working on farms and in the forestry industry. Today, the presence and contributions of Sikhs can be seen across Canada.

April is an important month for the Sikh community because it includes Vaisakhi, a celebration that marks the creation of the Khalsa flag and the Sikh articles of faith. Also known as Khalsa Day, Vaisakhi is celebrated by Sikh communities across Canada.
