Red Deer RCMP warn public of fraudulent text message

July 14, 2025 9:32 AM

Red Deer RCMP are warning the public about a fraudulent text message circulating in the area.

The text message tells recipients that they have an unpaid radar ticket and threatens demerit points, licence suspension, and even prosecution if the payment is not made by a specific deadline. It contains a link to a fraudulent website and refers to legislation that does not exist. It also contains language that is not used by legitimate enforcement agencies, including the phrase “please pay immediately before execution to avoid licence.”

Do not click the link or respond to the message.

Red Deer RCMP would like to remind residents that legitimate speeding tickets or traffic violations in Alberta are never issued via text message. Fines are issued by mail or in person, and payments are made through secure government platforms, not third-party websites.

Anyone who receives this or a similar message is advised to:

If you are a victim of this fraudulent website you are asked to contact your local police service. If you reside within the city of Red Deer, please contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200. It is also suggested to contact your financial institution and consider contacting both Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada to monitor your credit report for any unauthorized activity.
