With winter weather soon approaching, the Red Deer RCMP are encouraging residents to take time now to prepare both their homes and vehicles for the season. Early preparation improves safety and helps prevent emergencies when snow and freezing temperatures arrive.

Vehicle preparation tips:

  • Install winter tires before snow and icy conditions arrive.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, food, water, booster cables, and a shovel.
  • Check antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, brakes, and battery condition.
  • Allow extra travel time, slow down and adjust driving habits to road conditions.

Home preparation tips:

  • Check smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and heating systems.
  • Ensure walkways and driveways are well-lit and free of tripping hazards.
  • Begin a “nightly security routine” by locking doors, windows, garages, and vehicles before bed.
  • Stock up on winter supplies such as sand, salt, and snow shovels.

Good preparation, at home and on the road, is especially important in winter. “Before you set out, make sure you are prepared and check for the latest road and weather conditions on 511 Alberta ,” says Sgt. Brian Herrick, Red Deer RCMP Traffic Section.
