Red Deer RCMP advising of heavy police presence – Update #2

Red Deer, Alta. – The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has laid charges in connection with a Dec. 28, 2024, homicide at the corner of 49 Avenue and 53 Street in Red Deer. The deceased victim has been identified as 43-year-old Red Deer resident Anthony Spiller.

18-year-old Red Deer resident River Roan has been arrested and charged with second-degree-murder.

River has been taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for Jan. 2, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

Red Deer RCMP advising of heavy police presence – Update 1

On Dec. 28, 2024, at approximately 10:28 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received a complaint of a male who was standing at the corner of 49 Avenue and 53 Street in Red Deer with injuries consistent with a bladed weapon. Officers attended the location and arrested a 18-year-old male suspect a short distance away from the scene. Medical treatment was provided to the 43-year-old male victim but they succumbed to their injuries.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit have been engaged and are investigating the incident.

As a Judicial Interim Hearing has yet to be completed no additional information is available at this time. An update will be provided following the hearing.
