Heads up Red Deer! The annual Westerner Days Parade is rolling through downtown on Wednesday, July 16. Along with the colourful floats, marching bands and community spirit, there will be early morning road closures and transit changes.
Many people head out to watch the parade, so it's important to get there early. To accommodate the large amount of traffic, and to keep parade participants and spectators safe, several roads will be closed during the morning of parade day. If you choose to drive down to watch the parade, please plan to get downtown before the road closures begin. Closures along the parade route will be strictly enforced the entire duration of the parade.
Closures include:
- Spruce Drive at 43 Street: will close at 6 a.m., as the Pidherney Centre serves as the parade staging area. Motorists will be unable to turn right onto 43 St. until after 1 p.m.
- Ross Street westbound at 50A Street: will be closed at approximately 7:45 a.m. Traffic will be diverted through Woodlea to 55 Street.
- 49 Avenue northbound at 45 Street: will be closed at approximately 7:45 a.m., with traffic diverted at 45 Street. To continue northbound, please use Taylor Drive or 55 Street to connect back to 49 Avenue.
- 49 Street eastbound at 51 Avenue: will be closed at approximately 7:45 a.m., traffic will be diverted southbound onto 51 Avenue.
- Barricades will be placed along the parade route, and strictly enforced by 8:30 a.m. in the following locations:
- 47 Avenue at 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49 & 50 (Ross) Streets
- 49 Avenue at 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50 (Ross), 51, 52, 53 Streets
- 48 Avenue at 53 Street
During the parade, city transit will be rerouted to accommodate road closures and ensure the safety of all riders and parade attendees. The last planned departure from Sorensen Station will be at 8:15 a.m., after which a temporary terminal will be set up on 52 Avenue between 47 St. and 48 St. Transit users can visit MyBus to look up schedules, get departure times and see where buses are in real-time.
Roads will reopen once the entire parade has finished, at approximately 1 p.m. Please respect all barricades and signage. These road closures are strictly enforced to ensure the safety of parade attendees, participants, and motorists.
We appreciate your patience, planning and cooperation as we come together for this annual celebration.
