In response to community feedback and a commitment to revitalizing downtown Red Deer, the former Buffalo and Club Café site is undergoing an exciting transformation into a temporary event space.
Over recent months, The City engaged with Red Deerians to explore interim uses for the site pending its long-term redevelopment and it became evident that repurposing the site as bookable event space resonated strongly with the community. This initiative aims to inject vitality into the heart of downtown while The City progresses with the redevelopment and eventual sale of the properties at 5021 and 5023 Ross Street.
Acquired by The City in late 2022, the Buffalo Hotel and Club Café properties presented significant challenges due to their deteriorating condition, rendering restoration financially unfeasible. Consequently, to pave the way for comprehensive redevelopment, the decision was made to demolish the existing structures and repurpose the land.
"We recognized the importance of activating this space to benefit the community while we pursue long-term solutions for its redevelopment," said Bobby-Jo Standard, Community Development Supervisor. "By offering it as bookable event space, we're fostering community engagement and enriching the downtown experience."
The availability of this event space marks a pivotal step in the ongoing revitalization efforts, offering an attractive venue for a diverse range of gatherings, from cultural events to business functions.
Organizations and individuals interested in utilizing the site for their upcoming events are encouraged to apply for a Special Event Permit here.
