As we transition to fall, The City of Red Deer is reminding residents to maintain the grass and weeds that may be growing in back lanes behind their property.
Over the summer, The City’s Compliance Department has experienced an increase in complaints related to maintenance of back lanes on private property. Staff have noticed several additional properties across the city that are unsightly due to a lack of maintenance by property owners.
The Community Standards Bylaw’s Nuisance and Property Maintenance section includes provisions intended to prevent a disregard for general maintenance and upkeep, including unkempt grass and tall weeds, unsightly lands, growth of trees or shrubs, and garbage that may interfere with vehicles using alleys and impair visibility required for safe traffic flow.
Residents should also be aware that public workers require access to back-alleys in all seasons. Structures and items left in the back-alley set back portion of properties are violations and are required to be removed.
“We have found that some residents are not aware that they are responsible for the maintenance of their back alleys, while others have forgotten,” said Erin Stuart, Inspections and Licensing Manager. “We want to ensure property owners know what is required and we’re encouraging Red Deerians to tidy up these areas before the first snowfall. While fines are possible for those in breach of the Community Standards Bylaw, our preference is to solve this issue through education.”
