Red Deer, Alta. – On Nov. 2, 2022, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Red Deer RCMP were called to a north end motel after employees found suspicious items and an unidentified powder in a room. Upon arrival, RCMP officers quickly identified the items as drug paraphernalia and suspected the powder to be Fentanyl.
Safety measure were established around the room and Red Deer RCMP requested the RCMP’s specialised Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) team to attend and confirm the substances. On Nov. 3, 2022, the CLEAR team began their investigation and confirmed the presumptive presence of Fentanyl in the substance located inside the motel room.
RCMP with the support of the CLEAR team seized 2.9 kilograms of the substance.
As a result of the investigation, Red Deer RCMP have arrested and charged 30-year-old Shareef Sharkawi, a resident of Edmonton with:
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking
- Theft of motor vehicle
- Failure to comply with a release order (x2)
Sharkawi has been remanded and is set to appear before Red Deer Provincial Court on Nov. 4, 2022.
