For more than a decade, goats have played a vital role in The City’s commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly weed control. Come learn about the program and meet some of The City’s MVPs this Friday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Kerry Wood Nature Centre, 6300 45 Avenue.
Under the care of skilled herders, these goats help manage invasive plant species such as Canada thistle, toadflax, and leafy spurge—plants that are difficult to control even with chemical treatments.
By grazing selectively on invasive weeds while leaving native vegetation intact, goats provide a safe and natural alternative to herbicides, particularly in sensitive areas such as near waterways or on steep terrain. Their efforts not only reduce the need for chemical use but also support pollinators, enhance ecosystem health, and align with The City’s Environmental Master Plan.
At this year’s event, residents will have the opportunity to meet the goats, chat with herders Janette and Dan, and learn directly from the City Parks team about how the Goat Program is improving Red Deer’s parks and green spaces through innovation and stewardship.
Families are welcome to attend and learn about this unique program. Please note, for the safety and comfort of the goats, pets are not permitted. The event will run rain or shine.
