Motorists are advised of an upcoming road closure for the bridge construction project on Gaetz Avenue, across Waskasoo Creek.
From September 4 to October 9, Gaetz Avenue will be closed to all southbound through vehicle traffic between 45 Street and 43 Street. Motorists heading south on Gaetz are encouraged to divert early to Taylor Drive via Ross Street or 48 Avenue to avoid traffic delays along the 45 Street detour.
Due to the high amount of rain and resulting water levels in Waskasoo Creek experienced in June and July, work on the bridge has been delayed. A full closure of the roadway is being implemented to ensure the project can be completed before winter. Despite this delay, the utility work is complete, and roadway reconstruction work is on schedule.
Access to local businesses within the work site will continue to be maintained throughout the closure:
- Access to the Creekside Professional Centre (4320 50 Avenue) will be temporarily available via 43 Street. Gaetz Avenue south of Waskasoo Creek will be temporarily converted to two-way traffic.
- Access to the businesses north of Waskasoo Creek (near 45 Street) will be from existing accesses off 45 Street, as Gaetz Avenue will be fully closed between 45 Street and Waskasoo Creek.
- Detours and alternative access route signage will be in place to help.
Construction began February 16 and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026. This work is required to replace aging infrastructure and improve the safety and reliability of the Gaetz Avenue bridge crossing Waskasoo Creek. Work includes replacement of the deteriorated concrete bridge culvert originally constructed in 1912 and widened in 1957, replacement of aging underground water, sanitary, and storm lines, replacement of streetlights, and reconstruction of the Gaetz Avenue roadway surface.
Drivers are reminded to slow down in construction areas and to follow signage. Thank you for your patience while this infrastructure work is completed. Updates will be shared as construction progresses.
