City of Red Deer enhances accessible parking options for on-street stalls

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Beginning August 1, 2025, individuals displaying a valid handicap placard will be permitted to park for free in any on-street parking stall in Red Deer, not just those designated as accessible. This change is intended to make parking more convenient and flexible for accessible parkers and comes in response to feedback from residents and visitors.

This initiative applies only to on-street parking. City-owned parking lots are not affected by this change.

Accessible parking users must continue to follow all posted signs and comply with the current Traffic Bylaw, including the time limits posted for their parking zone.

“We heard from our community that accessible parkers needed more flexibility when parking downtown,” said Jill Manning, Parking and Licensing Supervisor. “This change supports inclusivity, accessibility, and convenience—without any additional cost or impact to City revenue.”

Key points:

  • Valid handicap placards allow free parking in any on-street stall.
  • City-owned parking lots are not affected by this change.
  • All posted parking time limits and regulations must still be followed.
  • The change takes effect on August 1, 2025.
