In a shared commitment to regional cooperation, long-term planning, and responsible growth, Red Deer City Council and Red Deer County Council have officially adopted a new Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP).

This updated IDP sets a renewed vision for collaboration between the two municipalities, replacing the previous plan that had guided intermunicipal relations for the past 18 years. Developed through a three-year partnership between the Regional Collaboration Committee (RCC), municipal administrations, and input from residents, businesses, and Indigenous communities, the plan provides a clear framework for how Red Deer and Red Deer County will grow together, sustainably, respectfully, and strategically.

“This is a proud moment for both municipalities,” said City of Red Deer Mayor, Ken Johnston. “This updated IDP reflects the strength of our working relationship and our shared belief that regional collaboration is the key to building strong, resilient communities. It’s a forward-looking plan that not only guides how we grow but how we work together with trust and mutual respect.”

“Today marks a significant step to sustainable growth; as neighboring communities that encompass both urban and rural areas, we recognize the shared opportunities that can be achieved when municipalities work together,” said Red Deer County Mayor, Jim Wood. “This plan reflects our commitment to residents and future generations by laying out a balanced approach to land use, development, and environmental stewardship; respecting our unique identities while embracing a common vision for the future.”

The IDP includes a renewed vision, principles, and goals that align with each municipality’s strategic plans and future aspirations. It addresses everything from land use and transportation to Indigenous Relations, joint economic development, and environmental preservation.

Both municipalities extend thanks to everyone who participated in the engagement process, including those who attended open houses, responded to surveys, and shared valuable insights throughout the development of the plan.
