Description
In many Indigenous communities, birds represent leadership qualities. Birds are also integral to a healthy ecosystem: migratory birds contribute to the different places they travel to in their cycle. A bird's migratory cycle resonates with me because I call multiple communities home and recognize that my presence affects the well-being of the people and environments I encounter.
Gaganoonidiwag is an Ojibwe word that means "They talk to each other." This installation features bird species from the local Red Deer area including a black-billed magpie, a red-tailed hawk with a ruby-throated hummingbird and a northern shoveler alongside a wood duck (rarely seen in Red Deer but common at the artist's home in Winnipeg).
