Red Deer RCMP make arrest for stolen vehicle and weapons

Red Deer, Alta - On February 28, 2024, the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) arrested a male and recovered a stolen vehicle.

While making patrols, RCMP CRT located a black Ford F-350 driving in a dangerous manner in the north end of Red Deer. Police determined that the truck had been stolen from Rimbey, Alta a few days prior.  A short time later the vehicle was found abandoned and the driver fled on foot before being arrested by police.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Matthew Pennington, a 23-year-old resident of Red Deer. Pennington was arrested and taken into custody. Upon searching Pennington, officers located a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, bear spray, a knife, break-in tools, and a small quantity of drugs on his person.

Pennington was charged with the following offences:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm in a vehicle
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possess a weapon for a dangerous purpose x2
  • Possession of property obtained by crime x2
  • Possession of drugs x2
  • Possess of break-in tools
  • Dangerous driving

Following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Pennington was released by a Justice for the court. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on March 20, 2024.
