48 Avenue construction starts Tuesday

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Construction on 48 Avenue between Ross (50) Street and 53 Street will start Tuesday as crews start work to bury existing overhead power lines.

Drivers can expect delays as lane closures start Tuesday, July 3 while crews prepare to bury the overhead power lines on 48 Avenue from Ross Street to 53 Street. The project also see the sidewalk replaced and new street lights installed, providing a more pedestrian-friendly link to the new Gary W Harris Celebration Plaza, which is set to open in November.

City Council approved additional funding to bury the power lines during the mid-year budget review in August 2017 after determining removing overhead power lines would expand the potential uses of the Celebration Plaza.

Lane closures will limit on-street parking along northbound 48 Avenue and access to parking lot P8 will only be available from Ross Street for the duration of the project.

Construction is expected to be complete by mid-September.

Drivers are reminded to slow down when driving in construction zones and obey all signs. Pedestrians are reminded to cross only at designated crosswalks.
