Why Black Cart?
The Black Cart rounds out the the new cart system pilot program. The pilot uses a new method of pickup, the automated cart system, which helps increase efficiency and safety. Also, the cart's lid helps reduce litter in surrounding areas.
What goes in the Black Cart?
Pretty much everything that doesn't go in your Green (organics) or Blue (recycling) Carts can go in your Black Cart including:
- Plastic films
- Aluminum foil
- Gift wrap and ribbons
- Laminated paper
- Wax paper
- Small lids
- Multi-material packaging (e.g. chip bags, frozen food trays, deodorant, toothpaste and pet food bags)
Unacceptable items: remember to take batteries, e-waste, household hazardous waste, fluorescent lights and tires to the Waste Management Facility for proper disposal.
How do I prepare my Black Cart for pickup?
Remember to park it, point it and space it.
Park it: Set out the Black Cart with the lid closed before 7 a.m. on your regular collection day. Ensure your cart is not blocking traffic and is on flat ground away from parked vehicles or other obstructions such as trees.
Point it: Whether you have front street or back alley collection, remember to point the white arrow on the lid of your cart away from your home.
Space it: Put the Black Cart on flat ground with at least 1 metre clearance on all sides of the cart so the truck’s collection arm can pick it up and empty it. Don’t place it against a fence or garage.
If my Black Cart fills up, where can I put my extra garbage?
Garbage set beside, or on top of the Black Cart will not be picked up. You can always drop off extra waste at the Waste Management Facility for a small fee, or if possible, you can hold onto excess waste until the next scheduled pickup day.
Can I request a different size for my Black Cart?
If you find that the Black Cart size you selected isn’t working for your household’s waste needs, you are welcome to request a different size. We have the following sizes available:
- 240 Litre cart (holds approximately 2-3 standard garbage bags)
- 120 Litre cart (holds approximately 1-2 standard garbage bags)

What if my Black Cart is damaged or stolen?
The City will replace Blue and Black Carts that are broken, vandalized or missing, at no charge. Each cart has a serial number specific to each pilot household address. To report a missing cart or to request a new one, call the Blue Line at 403-340-BLUE (2583).
